Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 18 and 60 years old
- Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 40 or higher, OR your BMI is 35 or higher AND you have at least one weight-related health condition (such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint problems, or sleep apnea)
- You are already scheduled to have a weight-loss (bariatric) surgery using keyhole/laparoscopic methods at Kasr Al-Ainy University Hospitals
- You are willing and able to sign a consent form agreeing to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- You are younger than 18 or older than 60 years old
- You have had weight-loss surgery before, or major surgery on your stomach, intestines, or bowel in the past
- You have significant kidney disease or have had a kidney transplant
- You have a chronic liver condition, such as cirrhosis, long-term hepatitis, or liver failure
- You have a long-term bowel condition such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, or chronic pancreatitis
- You currently have cancer, or have received chemotherapy or radiation treatment within the last 5 years
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have a long-term problem with alcohol or substance misuse
- You have taken antibiotics, probiotics, or prebiotic supplements within the 4 weeks before your stool sample is collected
- You have an active stomach or bowel infection at the time your sample is collected
