Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 years or older
  • People who have been referred to a specialist because interstitial lung disease (a type of lung condition) is suspected but has not yet been diagnosed
  • People whose CT scan shows certain lung changes — such as scarring, haziness, or structural abnormalities — that are not explained by another known condition
  • People with ongoing or worsening breathlessness, or a long-lasting cough not explained by another condition, along with at least one additional finding such as: an abnormal chest X-ray pattern; reduced lung capacity on breathing tests; crackling sounds at the base of the lungs or finger clubbing; a relevant exposure at work or in the environment, an autoimmune condition, or a suspected reaction to a medication or radiation; or a close family member (parent, sibling, or child) who has had interstitial lung disease
  • People who are able to give their informed consent to take part

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have already had a complete set of diagnostic tests for interstitial lung disease, including a chest CT scan, full lung function tests, a six-minute walk test, and a full blood test panel
  • People who have already been given a confirmed diagnosis of interstitial lung disease by another hospital or specialist
  • People who are currently unwell or medically unstable in a way that would make it unreliable to complete the required tests — for example, due to a respiratory infection, a sudden worsening of a lung condition, or acute heart failure
  • People experiencing a sudden lung reaction clearly caused by a medication, chemotherapy, or radiation treatment
  • People with medical, physical, psychiatric, or practical limitations that, in the investigators' judgement, would interfere with the diagnostic process or data collection (confirm with trial site)
  • People currently taking part in another clinical trial that may affect how often or when diagnostic procedures are carried out
  • People with cognitive impairment that prevents them from giving informed consent or completing study questionnaires
  • People who do not wish to participate or do not agree to their clinical data being collected and used
