Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are a woman or man aged 18 or older
- You are able to give your consent to take part in the study
- You are willing to follow the study rules and schedule for the full length of the trial
- You are willing to have a thin tube (catheter) briefly inserted to collect a urine sample on more than one occasion
- You fall into one of the following groups: healthy with no urinary issues; bacteria in your urine without symptoms; use of a catheter for bladder emptying; a current or recurring urinary tract infection (UTI); a current or recurring catheter-related UTI; chronic pelvic pain; overactive bladder (not caused by nerve problems); or non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer
Who may not be able to join:
- You are currently taking antibiotics, or have taken them in the last 21 days (this may not apply to some groups — confirm with trial site)
- Your UTI is caused by another treatable condition, such as bladder stones or an abnormal connection between the bladder and bowel
- You are currently using, or have recently used within 21 days, treatments to prevent UTIs such as urine-acidifying products or herbal remedies (this may not apply to some groups — confirm with trial site)
- Your kidneys or upper urinary system have gotten worse and need medical treatment
- You are receiving treatments that affect your immune system (other than routine vaccinations)
- You have a birth defect or other structural problem affecting your lower urinary tract (applies to the healthy volunteer group only)
- You are taking medication that suppresses your immune system (applies to the healthy volunteer group only)
- You need antiviral medication (applies to the healthy volunteer group only)
- You have a serious ongoing condition affecting your lungs, liver, digestive system, heart, kidneys, or immune system; or you have an active cancer other than bladder cancer; or any condition that could make you more likely to get infections
- You have an unstable medical or mental health condition that could put you at risk or affect your health during the trial
- You have had a problem with drug or alcohol dependence at any point in the 6 months before joining the study
- You are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- There are concerns that you may not be able to follow the trial procedures, for example due to language barriers, psychological difficulties, or memory problems
- You have taken part in another clinical trial within the past 4 weeks (or longer, depending on local rules)
- You are unconscious or heavily sedated
- You have had an allergic reaction to the study medication or to a similar type of medication in the past
