Who might be able to join this trial:
- You must be older than 30 years of age.
- You have been diagnosed with dementia or a brain-related condition such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Lewy body dementia, Niemann-Pick type 2, or vascular dementia (people without these conditions who are of a similar age and sex may also be invited to take part as a comparison group).
- Most participants must have already had at least one test to help confirm their diagnosis, such as a genetic test, a blood test, a brain scan, or a spinal fluid test — though people with Parkinson's disease or Lewy body dementia may only need to have been assessed by a neurologist (a brain and nerve specialist).
- You must have a minimum level of vision (at least 6/60 with glasses or contact lenses if needed) in both eyes, and must not have serious eye conditions such as advanced macular degeneration, advanced glaucoma, or more than moderate diabetic eye disease.
- You are willing to take part in the study and attend the Centre for Eye Research Australia.
- You are able to bring a friend or family member with you to the appointment.
Who may not be able to join:
- You are not able to give your own informed consent to take part in the study.
- You have an eye condition that would prevent clear images of the back of your eye from being taken, such as a dense cataract, severe clouding of the cornea, or bleeding inside the eye.
- You have a known medical reason why eye drops used to widen (dilate) your pupils cannot be used safely.
- You have any other condition that the research team believes could put your safety at risk or affect the quality of the eye images (confirm with trial site).
