Who might be able to join this trial:

• You are 18 years old or older
• You have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and are currently going through a depressive episode, confirmed through a structured clinical interview
• Your depression symptoms are at least moderate in severity, based on a specific rating scale used by the research team
• You are either not taking antidepressant medication, or you have been on a stable dose of antidepressants for at least 6 weeks before joining
• You are either not currently in therapy, or you have been attending ongoing therapy consistently for at least 6 weeks before joining
• You are currently under the care of a GP (family doctor)
• You are happy for the research team to keep your GP regularly updated about your participation
• You are able to read, understand, and sign a consent form agreeing to take part

Who may not be able to join:

• You are considered to be at significant risk of suicide, based on answers to a standard safety questionnaire used by the research team
• You have another major mental health condition (such as obsessive compulsive disorder) as your primary diagnosis
• Your score on a scale measuring manic symptoms is 20 or above, suggesting significant manic symptoms
• You currently take certain medications every day that affect brain activity (such as benzodiazepines, for example diazepam/Valium)
• You currently use illegal drugs, or you drink heavily in a way that suggests a high risk of alcohol problems (based on a short questionnaire)
• You have previously had any brain stimulation treatments for depression, such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), or deep brain stimulation, or have had brain surgery for depression
• You have previously been treated for depression using esketamine or ketamine
• You have a physical health condition that could be causing or mimicking mood symptoms (such as a hormonal disorder) (confirm with trial site)
• You have a history of heart attack, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, or other significant heart problems
• You have a condition affecting memory or thinking, such as dementia
• You have a history of a neurological condition, such as stroke, epilepsy, seizures, or Parkinson's disease
• You have a history of migraines or persistent, hard-to-treat headaches
• You have any implant in your brain, a defect in your skull, or an active medical implant device in your body
• You have shrapnel or any metal fragments in your head
• You are female, could potentially become pregnant, and are currently pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the study
• You are already taking part in another clinical research trial that involves a treatment or intervention
