Who may not be able to join:

  • People for whom the brain stimulation techniques used in this trial (TI and/or TMS) are not safe — for example, those with a history of epilepsy, metal implants in the head or neck, brain stimulators, vagus nerve stimulators, a VP shunt, or a pacemaker
  • People currently taking medications that may raise the risk of seizures, such as bupropion, varenicline, chlorpromazine, or theophylline
  • People with a current or past serious or unstable medical condition affecting the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, hormonal system, brain or nervous system, or blood
  • People who have had a head injury that caused more than a brief loss of consciousness
  • People who are currently using cocaine or stimulant drugs such as amphetamine or methamphetamine
  • People whose answers across self-report measures show significant inconsistencies
  • People who do not speak fluent English, as all questionnaires, interviews, and consent materials used in this trial are only available in English
