  • Both of your biological parents are of Han Chinese ethnicity
  • You are between 18 and 45 years old (any gender)
  • You have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder according to the DSM-5 (a standard medical guide used to diagnose mental health conditions)
  • You are either overweight based on your BMI (28 or above), or your waist measurement is 90 cm or more (for men) or 85 cm or more (for women)

  • You and your family members involved in the study have agreed to take part by signing a consent form

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have been diagnosed with other mental health conditions listed in the DSM-5, in addition to bipolar disorder
  • People whose mental health problems are caused by alcohol or drug use, or who have serious physical health conditions
  • People who have eaten foods containing probiotics or prebiotics (like certain yogurts or supplements) in the week before joining, or who have had a respiratory, urinary, or digestive infection, or taken antibiotics in the month before joining
  • People who are currently having serious thoughts of suicide or self-harm, or who are severely agitated or restless
  • People who are unable to follow a treatment plan as directed, or who do not have a caregiver or guardian available
  • Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant
  • People who cannot have an MRI scan, for example because they have metal implants or a pacemaker in their body
