Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are currently experiencing a depressive episode (whether related to depression alone or bipolar disorder)
- You are currently admitted to a participating department within the Mental Health Services of the Capital Region of Denmark
- Your psychiatrist has referred you for ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) and you have agreed to receive it
- You are currently taking a benzodiazepine (a type of sedative/anxiety medication) and/or zopiclone (a sleeping medication) at or above a certain minimum daily dose
Who may not be able to join:
- You are being required to have ECT against your will (involuntary treatment)
- You have a known significant structural problem with the brain that is likely to affect memory or thinking
- You are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- You are unable to read or understand Danish
- You currently have an acute brain condition, such as severe confusion (delirium), that would prevent you from giving informed consent
- You have a condition that increases the risk of prolonged or uncontrollable seizures, such as epilepsy, or you are going through withdrawal from alcohol or sedative medications
- You have a condition that affects how your body processes a medication called flumazenil, such as liver failure (confirm with trial site)
