Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older.
- People who are scheduled to have heart surgery using a heart-lung bypass machine, with plans to stay in a cardiac surgery intensive care unit (ICU) for more than 24 hours after the operation.
- People who are able to communicate clearly, and whose family members are willing to participate and cooperate with the study.
- People who are fully conscious before the first study activity after surgery, have been assessed as not having delirium (a state of sudden confusion) using a standard ICU testing tool, and are able to understand and take part in the study activities and assessments.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have experienced a serious traumatic event in the past year, such as a close family member or partner being diagnosed with a serious illness, or the death of a close family member or partner.
- People who are currently receiving any treatment for a mental health condition — including medication or talking therapy — for conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia-related conditions.
- People who have a history of a formally diagnosed severe mental health disorder, or any mental health condition caused by a physical brain disease or injury.
