Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have experienced trauma connected to their work, and who either score at or above a certain level on a standardised stress symptom checklist (PCL-5), meet criteria for full or partial PTSD on a clinical interview, OR show evidence of work-related trauma exposure alongside significant moral distress, difficulty functioning in daily life, or high perceived stress levels (as measured by specific assessment tools)
- People who work as first responders or emergency medical personnel
- People who are able to read, speak, and understand English
- People who are able to give their own informed consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a history of neurological conditions
- People with skin conditions or open wounds
- People who have a diagnosis of a psychotic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, a severe substance use disorder, or an eating disorder (as defined by DSM-5 criteria)
- People who are unable to lie comfortably in a shallow pool of water
- People who do not complete a required pre-float safety checklist
- People who test positive for alcohol on a breathalyzer or test positive for drugs on a urine test
- People who are unwilling to consent or to complete the main parts of the study
- People for whom MRI scanning is not safe (confirm with trial site for specific MRI-related restrictions)
- People with unstable medical conditions
- People who are pregnant
- People who the research team determines are unlikely to be able to follow the study procedures
- People who have had a change in dose or type of a medication that may affect brain function (such as anti-anxiety medications, antipsychotics, antidepressants, benzodiazepines, or mood stabilisers) within the six weeks before enrolling
