Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or a related inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), confirmed by medical tests, scans, or tissue samples
- You have symptoms that suggest an unclassified inflammatory bowel disease, with lab evidence of intestinal inflammation
- You have symptoms that could suggest IBD — such as stomach pain, diarrhea, bleeding from the gut, weight loss, fistulae, skin problems, joint pain, eye inflammation, fatigue, or fever — even if no firm diagnosis has been made yet
- You have a known genetic condition that is linked to a higher risk of IBD, with or without symptoms
- You are between 0 and 75 years old (those visiting the NIH clinic in person must be over 18 unless samples are being sent in by mail, in which case younger children may be included — confirm with trial site)
- If you are taking part in a biopsy procedure, your recent blood test results must show healthy enough levels of red blood cells, platelets, and clotting factors (within the last two weeks — confirm specific values with trial site)
- You are able to give your own consent to take part in the study
Healthy volunteers may also be eligible if:
- You are willing to give a blood sample and/or have an endoscopy with biopsy for research purposes
- You are 18 years old or older
- You are willing to have your samples stored for research
Who may not be able to join:
- You do not meet the eligibility requirements listed above
- You have a medical, psychiatric, or personal situation that the research team believes would make it unsafe or unsuitable for you to take part
- (For healthy volunteers only) You have a history of inflammatory bowel disease
- (For healthy volunteers only) You currently have an infection in your gut or body that requires antibiotic treatment
- (For healthy volunteers only) You have any condition that the research team believes puts you at unnecessary risk by joining the study
