Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Children from birth to 18 years of age who have been diagnosed with a stroke after January 1, 2003, at one of the participating trial sites
  • Children diagnosed with arterial ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked artery in the brain)
  • Children diagnosed with cerebral sinovenous thrombosis (a blood clot in the veins of the brain)
  • Children diagnosed with both of the above stroke types together

  • Children diagnosed with a bleeding-type stroke (hemorrhagic stroke)
  • Children who have been diagnosed with conditions that put them at high risk of stroke, such as problems with blood vessels in the brain, sickle cell disease-related brain damage, or abnormal tangles of blood vessels in the brain (arteriovenous malformations)

Who may not be able to join:

  • Premature babies (born early) who have been diagnosed with an arterial ischemic stroke
  • Premature babies (born early) who have been diagnosed with a presumed perinatal ischemic stroke
  • Children who have had a transient ischemic attack (a brief, temporary stroke-like episode sometimes called a "mini-stroke")
  • Children whose brain bleeding was caused by a physical injury or trauma
  • Children or families who do not agree to give consent to take part in the registry
