Who might be able to join this trial:
(For women with PCOS):
- You are between 18 and 40 years old
- Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 25 and 40 (this is a measure of body weight relative to height)
- You have been diagnosed with PCOS based on having at least two of the following: unusual hair growth or acne; irregular or absent periods (periods more than 35 days apart, fewer than 8 per year, or fewer than 3 per year); or cysts on the ovaries seen on an internal ultrasound scan
- You are willing to sign a consent form agreeing to take part
(For comparison/control participants — women without PCOS):
- You have a BMI between 25 and 40, regular periods roughly every 28 days, and no signs of excess hair growth or other PCOS symptoms
Who may not be able to join:
- You are over 40 years old
- You have certain other hormonal or gland-related conditions, such as a specific type of adrenal gland disorder, a hormone-producing tumour, or a suspected condition called Cushing's syndrome (confirm with trial site)
- You have known kidney disease, liver problems, an autoimmune condition, or cancer
- You have any ongoing condition that could suddenly affect your kidneys or reduce oxygen supply to your body's tissues (confirm with trial site)
- You have Type 1 diabetes
- You have taken certain medications in the last 12 weeks, including steroids (cortisone), antidepressants, other diabetes medicines (such as insulin), hormonal contraceptives, or hormone-based fertility treatments — or have had a long-acting contraceptive injection (such as Depo-Provera) in the last 6 months
- You have a known allergy or sensitivity to metformin or any of its ingredients
- Your blood pressure is higher than 160/100 mmHg
- You are pregnant or have been breastfeeding in the last 6 months
- You have had acupuncture in the last 2 months
- You smoke daily or drink alcohol daily
- There is a language barrier or another difficulty that would make it hard for you to fully understand the information provided about the trial
