Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have experienced lung-related symptoms such as cough, tiredness, general feeling of being unwell, fever, unexplained weight loss, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, or chest discomfort.
- People who have had an abnormal chest X-ray or CT scan within the past 2 years, showing specific findings such as nodules, cavities, or signs of airway damage with small nodules.
- People whose test results show a type of bacteria called NTM (non-tuberculous mycobacteria) found in at least two separate sputum (mucus) samples, or in one sample taken during a lung washout procedure or lung biopsy (this group is classed as an "NTM case").
- People whose test results do NOT show NTM bacteria in sputum samples or lung samples, but who still have symptoms and imaging findings as described above (this group is classed as an "NTM control").
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have taken antibiotic or steroid medications by mouth within the past month (note: long-term use of a specific type of antibiotic called macrolides, or inhaled steroids used for more than one month, may still be acceptable — confirm with trial site).
- People who have smoked recently.
- People whose lung function test results show reduced breathing capacity below a certain level (confirm with trial site — this applies to the bronchoscopy part of the study only).
- People with significant heart problems, including an abnormal heart tracing (ECG), known or suspected heart disease, or heart failure (bronchoscopy part only).
- People who have diabetes (bronchoscopy part only).
- People with significant liver or kidney disease (bronchoscopy part only).
- People with serious blood clotting problems, based on specific blood test results (bronchoscopy part only).
- People who are pregnant (bronchoscopy part only).
- People who drink more than 6 beers or more than 4 mixed alcoholic drinks per day (bronchoscopy part only).
- People who are not able to give informed consent to take part in the study (bronchoscopy part only).
