Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have a flare-up of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) causing a buildup of carbon dioxide in the blood, shown by specific blood gas test results (confirm with trial site)

- People who are visibly using the muscles in their neck, shoulders, or chest to help them breathe

Who may not be able to join:
- People whose blood acidity level is severely abnormal (below a pH of 7.25), indicating very serious breathing failure
- People whose level of consciousness or alertness is significantly reduced
- People who need an emergency breathing tube (intubation) right away
- People who have a collapsed lung with a chest drain and an ongoing air leak
- People whose blood pressure or circulation is dangerously unstable and requires medication to maintain it
- People who are unable or unwilling to cooperate with the trial procedures
- People who have injuries to the skin, chest wall, or abdomen that could be made worse by placing a sensor on the body's surface
- People where the treating doctor, based on their clinical judgement, does not consider participation appropriate
- People with a body mass index (a measure of weight relative to height) above 40
