Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 65 years old, of any gender
- People with a limited smoking history (less than 10 pack-years) who have not smoked in the past year
- People already on blood pressure medication or managing diabetes through diet and exercise alone may still be considered
- Asthma groups: People from any racial or ethnic background who have been diagnosed with asthma by a doctor for more than 6 months
- Asthma with metabolic syndrome group: People with asthma who also meet at least three of the following: high triglycerides (≥150 mg/dl); low HDL cholesterol (≤50 mg/dl for women, ≤40 mg/dl for men); high fasting blood sugar (≥100 mg/dl); large waist circumference (over 40 inches for men, over 35 inches for women); a previous diagnosis of high blood pressure or currently on blood pressure medication; or two consecutive blood pressure readings above 130/85
- Asthma without metabolic syndrome group: People with asthma whose lung function testing meets specific thresholds and who have a BMI of 30 or above (confirm with trial site for exact lung function details)
- Non-obese group: People with a BMI below 30
- Non-asthma group: People with no history of asthma or other airway diseases, normal lung function test results, and a BMI of 30 or above
Who may not be able to join:
- People with serious or poorly controlled other medical conditions, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes with an HbA1c above 6.5, kidney disease (creatinine above 2.0), brain damage, or a diagnosed mental health condition
- People with chronic kidney failure (creatinine above 2.0) at the screening visit
- People currently taking statin medications (used to lower cholesterol)
- People currently taking diabetes medications
- People who test positive for pregnancy
- People who test positive for nicotine or cannabis (THC) in a urine test
- People who are currently participating in, or have participated in, another research study or received an investigational treatment within the past 30 days
- People who, in the investigator's opinion, are unlikely to complete the study or for whom the study procedures (including a bronchoscopy) would pose too much risk
- Asthma groups only: People who have had a respiratory tract infection in the last 4 weeks; taken oral or systemic steroid medication (such as prednisone) in the last 4 weeks; been hospitalised for asthma in the last 2 months; or visited an emergency room for asthma in the last 4 weeks
