Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 or older
  • People who have been diagnosed by a neurologist with frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasia, semantic dementia, motor neuron disorder, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), progressive bulbar palsy, corticobasal syndrome, Huntington's disease, or another related brain or nerve condition that develops in adulthood
  • People who carry a gene mutation known to cause familial ALS or FTD (the inherited forms of these conditions)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have other serious brain, nerve, or medical conditions that could cause progressive weakness or thinking problems — such as structural brain or spinal cord disease, metabolic diseases, certain cancer-related syndromes, infections, or nerve disorders
  • People with an unstable medical condition that the trial doctors consider too risky for safe participation
  • People who need breathing support from a ventilator during the day at the time of joining the trial
  • People who are unable to travel to the NIH (National Institutes of Health) facility
  • People with tattoos above the neck or permanent makeup will not be able to take part in the 7T MRI scan portion of the study (confirm with trial site regarding overall eligibility)
  • People with pacemakers, brain stimulators, certain metal implants, or other implanted electrical or metal devices will not be excluded from the trial overall, but will not be able to undergo the MRI portion of the study
