How these figures are counted
  • Trials on record is every trial tagged to this condition at any stage, except those withdrawn before starting or terminated early. Most are completed rather than ongoing, so this is a measure of research history, not of current activity. It is also smaller than the sitewide "trials tracked" figure, which does include withdrawn and terminated trials.
  • Recruiting now counts only trials whose registry status is "Recruiting". Trials listed as not yet recruiting or enrolling by invitation are excluded, so this understates how many may open to new participants soon.
  • Australian sites counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that list at least one Australian site. A site being listed does not mean it is currently enrolling, and Australian trials registered only on ANZCTR are not counted yet, so this understates local availability.
  • Phase 3 trials counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that are at Phase 3.

Understanding Motor Neurone Disease

Motor Neurone Disease, often called MND, is a condition that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control movement. These nerve cells, called motor neurones, gradually stop working over time. As this happens, the muscles they normally send signals to begin to weaken and waste away. This can affect a person's ability to move, speak, swallow, and breathe. MND is not contagious, and it is not caused by anything a person or their family did wrong.

In Australia, around 2,000 people are living with MND at any given time, and approximately 400 Australians are diagnosed with the condition each year. It most commonly affects people over the age of 50, though it can occur in younger adults as well. It affects both men and women, and people from all walks of life. The most common form is called ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), though there are several other types that progress at different rates and affect different functions.

While there is currently no cure for MND, there are a range of supports and treatments available that aim to manage symptoms and maintain quality of life for as long as possible. Care is typically provided by a team of health professionals, which might include neurologists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and specialist nurses. There is also significant ongoing research happening in Australia and around the world. MND Australia and state-based MND associations are valuable sources of information and practical support for people and their families.

Can you access treatment for Motor Neurone Disease in Australia right now? Here's what's publicly known.

Information on this site does not constitute medical advice. Data is sourced from publicly available government registries. Always consult your doctor before making any health decisions. Trial status should be verified directly with the trial site.

The state of access for Motor Neurone Disease

AI generated state of access summary. Written by an AI model from the official source data and checked on a sample basis. It can contain mistakes, so confirm anything important against the original source. How we use AI

170 trials are recruiting globally for MND right now, 6 with Australian sites. That's smaller than some other conditions on this site, which reflects how much rarer MND is, not a lack of research interest.

5 trials are currently at Phase 3. That's a small but real number of treatments in the most advanced stage of testing before approval can even be considered. NIH funding for MND research totals $3 billion across the two most recent complete US federal financial years, reflecting sustained investment even though the visible AU trial count is smaller than some other conditions on this site.

I know MND moves fast for the people living with it, and "there's research happening" isn't the same as "there's something available now." I built this page specifically because the gap between international trial activity and actual Australian access is one of the hardest things to track yourself while also managing a diagnosis. This updates nightly. If anything changes, a new AU site opens, a PBS listing changes, it appears here automatically.

Not medical advice. Your specialist is the right person for decisions specific to you.

State of access last reviewed 28 July 2026.

Advocacy and support in Australia

Organisations that can offer information, support, or connection for Motor Neurone Disease. Where more than one is listed, they serve different needs or regions, so choose whichever fits your situation.

MND Australia is the national body, which merged in MND research in late 2024. Six state MND associations also provide services locally in NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA and TAS, so which is most relevant may depend on where you live.

This is a starting point, not medical advice or an endorsement. Contact details change; search the organisation name to find its current website.
