Who might be able to join this trial:
Volunteers:
- People who have given their informed consent to participate in the trial
Stroke patients:
- People who have given their informed consent to participate in the trial
- People who have had a new stroke in a specific area of the brain (above the brainstem), confirmed by a CT or MRI scan, that occurred less than 72 hours ago
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had a previous stroke or already have swallowing difficulties before this study
- People whose CT or MRI scan shows extensive areas of damage to the white matter of the brain
- People who have allergies to strong smells or food flavourings
- Stroke patients who have a medical reason why they cannot undergo a throat camera examination (a thin flexible camera used to check swallowing), or a CT or MRI scan (this exclusion applies to stroke patients only)
