Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have a type of emphysema called "heterogeneous emphysema," confirmed by a detailed CT scan showing that the disease is unevenly distributed across at least one area of the lung that would be treated.
- People who are 18 years of age or older.
- People who are willing and able to give written consent to be included in the registry.
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose lung function (measured by a breathing test called FEV1) is below 20% of the expected normal level.
- People whose lungs' ability to transfer oxygen into the blood (measured by a test called DLCO) is below 20% of the expected normal level.
- People who are unable to walk more than 140 metres in 6 minutes, even after receiving the best available medical treatment for their condition.
- People whose COPD has been unstable, meaning they have had more than 3 hospital stays related to COPD requiring antibiotics in the past 12 months, or a COPD-related hospital stay in the past 3 months, or who need daily steroid tablets (such as prednisolone) at a dose above 5 mg.
- People who have other serious illnesses or take certain medications that could raise the risk of complications from the treatment — for example, immune system disorders, medications that suppress the immune system, bleeding disorders, unstable heart or circulation problems, a history of asthma, or a condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
- People who have been newly prescribed morphine-based pain medications within the last 4 weeks.
- People who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People whose lower lung lobes are very severely diseased, based on a specific measurement of lung tissue density (confirm with trial site).
- People who have a current bacterial infection or signs of active infection such as fever or an elevated white blood cell count.
- People who have a single large air pocket (bulla) taking up more than one-third of a lung lobe, or a particular pattern of emphysema in the lung lobe to be treated (confirm with trial site).
- People who have had a respiratory infection or a COPD flare-up in the past 6 weeks.
