Who might be able to join this trial:
Retrospective (past medical records) group:
- People who were first diagnosed with or showed symptoms of Takayasu arteritis at age 40 or younger
- People who experienced pain, weakness, or cramping in their arms or legs due to reduced blood flow
- People who had weak or absent pulse in one or both arms
- People who had a difference of 10 mmHg or more in blood pressure readings between their two arms
- People in whom a whooshing sound (bruit) was heard over the arteries near the collarbone or main body artery (aorta)
- People whose imaging scans (MRI or CT scan of the blood vessels) showed narrowing or blockage in arteries branching off the aorta
- Note: Meeting more than 3 of the 6 criteria above is used to suggest a diagnosis of Takayasu arteritis
Prospective (ongoing) group:
- People currently suspected of having Takayasu arteritis, or people already diagnosed with Takayasu arteritis who need their disease activity assessed
Who may not be able to join:
Retrospective group:
- People whose artery damage appears to be caused entirely by a hardening/narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), rather than Takayasu arteritis
- People who have another autoimmune disease alongside Takayasu arteritis, such as certain types of blood vessel inflammation (ANCA-associated vasculitis) or lupus
- People diagnosed with Cogan's syndrome (a rare inflammatory condition)
- People diagnosed with Behcet's disease (a rare disorder causing blood vessel inflammation)
- People with any serious current or ongoing infection
- People diagnosed with Giant cell arteritis (a type of large vessel inflammation in people aged 50 or older) or other infection-related forms of large vessel inflammation
Prospective group:
- People who have not had any imaging scans of their blood vessels
- People confirmed to have another autoimmune disease, such as ANCA-associated vasculitis or lupus
