Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You must be willing to sign a consent form showing you understand the nature of the study and agree to share your health information.
  • You must be between 30 and 84 years old.
  • You must fall into one of these groups: newly diagnosed diabetes (less than 3 years ago) with or without pancreatic cancer or chronic pancreatitis; long-standing diabetes (3 or more years) with or without pancreatic cancer or chronic pancreatitis; or no diabetes, whether or not you have pancreatic cancer or chronic pancreatitis.

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have a serious health condition that cannot be well managed with treatment, or that might make it unsafe for you to take part in the study procedures.
  • Your diabetes is not stable enough to safely pause your diabetes medications during a meal-based test used in the study.
  • You take high daily doses of insulin (0.75 units per kilogram of body weight or more per day) — though this does not apply to pancreatic cancer patients who only have a fasting blood draw.
  • You are in the non-pancreatic disease group and take certain longer-acting diabetes medications, such as thiazolidinediones or once-weekly GLP-1 injections (like Ozempic, Trulicity, or Bydureon).
  • You are currently taking steroid tablets by mouth.
  • You were hospitalised for a sudden, severe pancreas attack (acute pancreatitis) within the last 2 months — though this may not apply to certain pancreatic cancer patients.
  • You have chronic pancreatitis and a cyst that is causing symptoms — though this may not apply to certain pancreatic cancer patients.
  • You have a type of pancreatic cancer other than adenocarcinoma (for example, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours are not included).
  • You have previously had surgery on your pancreas — though some exceptions may apply for chronic pancreatitis patients (confirm with trial site).
  • You have previously received chemotherapy or radiation treatment for pancreatic cancer.
  • You have previously had stomach surgery or a procedure to reduce stomach size — though this may not apply to certain pancreatic cancer patients.
  • You have previously been diagnosed with a condition where your stomach empties too slowly (gastroparesis) — though this may not apply to certain pancreatic cancer patients.
  • You are currently being treated for any cancer, except certain minor skin cancers or early-stage cervical cancer.
  • You are allergic or intolerant to any ingredients in the Boost nutritional drink used in the meal-based test — though this does not apply to certain pancreatic cancer patients who only have a fasting blood draw.
