Who might be able to join this trial:
- You must be showing signs and symptoms of an acute (sudden) ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel in the brain)
- You must be 18 years old or older
- Your stroke must be rated at least 6 on a standard stroke severity scale, meaning it is causing noticeable disability (confirm with trial site)
- A procedure to remove the blood clot from the blood vessel must be able to start between 6 and 24 hours after you were last known to be feeling well
- You must not have had significant disability before the stroke — you must have been mostly able to manage daily life on your own beforehand
- You or your legal representative must sign a consent form agreeing to participate
- Brain scans must show a blockage in one of the main arteries supplying blood to the brain (in the neck or head)
- Brain scans must show that there is still a significant area of brain that could be saved, with only a limited area of brain already damaged
Who may not be able to join:
- You have another serious or life-threatening illness, or your life expectancy is less than 90 days
- You have another disease or condition that could interfere with assessing your recovery or make follow-up visits difficult or unsafe
- You are unable to have a specialised brain scan using a dye (contrast) with either MRI or CT
- You are pregnant
- You have a known serious allergy to the dye used in medical scans (contrast agents)
- You received a clot-busting drug called tPA more than 6 hours after you were last known to be well
- You have a bleeding disorder or blood clotting problem, or your blood-thinning medication levels are too high (confirm with trial site)
- You had a seizure at the start of your stroke that makes it impossible to accurately measure how severe your stroke is
- You are currently taking part in another clinical trial testing a drug or medical device
- You have any other condition that the doctor believes makes the clot-removal procedure unsafe or unsuitable for you
- Your brain scan shows too much early damage based on a specific scoring system (confirm with trial site)
- Your brain scan shows a brain tumour (with some exceptions), fresh bleeding in or around the brain, or abnormal blood vessels
- Your brain scan shows significant swelling in the brain causing a shift of brain structures
- Your brain scan shows a tear in the wall of the main artery in your neck supplying the brain
- You have a previously placed stent in the relevant brain artery, very twisted arteries, or other artery problems that would make the clot-removal procedure unsafe
