Who might be able to join this trial:
People aged 19 or older
People who are able to sign a written consent form agreeing to take part
People who are able to travel to Omaha, Nebraska in person twice a year for blood sample collection
People who meet the criteria for at least one of the following three groups:
Group 1 – New or early diabetes:
- People diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within the last 3 years (based on specific blood sugar test results or a doctor's diagnosis), OR people with high-risk pre-diabetes based on specific blood sugar or glucose test results, OR people who have been taking the medication metformin for less than 3 years for pre-diabetes
Group 2 – Pancreatic cysts or chronic pancreas inflammation:
- People who have a pancreatic cyst for which surgery, a specialised ultrasound, or ongoing imaging has been recommended, OR people diagnosed with long-term inflammation of the pancreas, confirmed by imaging, specialised ultrasound, functional testing, or a stomach/digestive specialist
Group 3 – Inherited (family or genetic) risk:
- People with two or more blood relatives (ranging from parents to first cousins) who have had pancreatic cancer, OR people with one parent, sibling, or child diagnosed with pancreatic cancer before age 60, OR people who carry a gene mutation linked to a higher-than-average risk of pancreatic cancer (such as BRCA1, BRCA2, Lynch syndrome genes, or several others — confirm full list with trial site), OR people whose personal or family history meets the criteria for a hereditary cancer syndrome that includes a relative with pancreatic cancer
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have personally been diagnosed with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (a specific type of pancreatic cancer)
- People who are currently receiving active treatment for any cancer diagnosis (long-term hormonal therapy is not counted as an exclusion)
- People who have been taking metformin for pre-diabetes for 3 years or more
