Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are older than 18 years of age
- People who experience typical acid reflux symptoms (such as heartburn or stomach contents coming back up into the throat) at least twice a week, even while taking acid-reducing medication called a PPI for at least one month
- People whose acid reflux symptom score (measured by a standard questionnaire called the RDQ) is above 3 when not taking PPI medication
- People who have health insurance
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had surgery on the stomach or esophagus (the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach)
- People with a history of tumors in the esophagus or stomach, a narrowing of the esophagus, or swollen veins in the esophagus
- People who are pregnant (as assessed at the first visit)
- People for whom general anesthesia is not medically safe
- People with a pacemaker or an implantable heart defibrillator device, as these are not compatible with the wireless pH monitoring capsule used in this trial
- People who cannot tolerate a thin tube being passed through the nose, have a significant bleeding condition, or have a known blockage in the esophagus, as these make a specific swallowing test (called HRIM) unsafe
- People with an intolerance or allergy to any ingredient in the test meal used in the trial
- People with an intolerance or allergy to PPI medication
- People who are not able to give informed consent
- People who are under legal supervision or guardianship
- People who do not wish to participate in the study
- People who are currently participating in another clinical study at the same time
