Who might be able to join this trial:

For both patients and people in the control group:

• People who are willing to take part and have signed the required consent form
• People who are male or female

For patients only:

• People who are covered by health insurance
• People who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizo-affective disorder according to standard diagnostic criteria (DSM-5)
• People who have been diagnosed with periodic catatonia or hebephrenia according to the WKL classification system (confirm with trial site)
• People whose condition has been clinically stable for at least 2 months
• People who may be either hospital inpatients or outpatients

For people in the control group only:

• People with no history of psychiatric conditions

Who may not be able to join:

For both patients and people in the control group:

• People who currently have a serious or unstable physical illness
• People with a history of neurological conditions, such as epilepsy, brain injury, or brain surgery
• People who currently have a substance use disorder (as defined by DSM-5 criteria)
• People who currently have a major depressive disorder (as defined by DSM-5 criteria)
• People with an intellectual disability (IQ below 70)
• People who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
• People who are currently under a legal guardianship order
• People for whom an fMRI scan would be medically unsuitable

For people in the control group only:

• People who have taken any psychiatric or psychotropic medications within the last 3 weeks
