  • People who are beginning rehabilitation for their first-ever acute lateral ankle sprain (mild, moderate, or severe)
  • People whose ankle sprain happened within 72 hours before joining the study
  • People whose ankle sprain was diagnosed by a doctor, medic, athletic trainer, physical therapist, or another qualified medical provider working in an operational setting

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have a personal or family history of epilepsy or seizures
  • People who have a history of migraine headaches
  • People who have a foreign object in their eye, increased pressure in the skull, an open head injury, or a significant closed head injury
  • People who have cochlear implants (hearing devices surgically placed in the ear)
  • People who have implanted brain stimulators, aneurysm clips, or any other metal in the head (not including the mouth)
  • People who have implanted medication pumps, pacemakers, or lines placed inside the heart
  • People who are currently taking tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotic medications, or other drugs known to lower the threshold for seizures
  • People who have been diagnosed with a major psychiatric disorder
  • People who have a history of illicit drug use
  • People who currently misuse alcohol or are going through alcohol withdrawal
  • People who have a history of heart disease
