Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are older than 55 years of age.
- You are scheduled to have a specific type of shoulder replacement surgery called a primary reverse total shoulder replacement (for the first time).
- You are able to fill out questionnaires on your own.
- You are willing and able to come back for all required follow-up visits during the study.
- You are willing to give your formal agreement (consent) to take part in the study.
- You can read and communicate in English.
Who may not be able to join:
- You are having shoulder replacement surgery because of a broken bone near the top of your upper arm.
- You have had previous shoulder surgery, including any prior shoulder replacement, partial shoulder replacement, or surgery to fix shoulder instability.
- You currently have a bacterial infection in your shoulder.
- You are having any other procedure done on the same shoulder at the same time.
- You have another problem with either arm that is currently being treated with surgery or a brace.
- You have an inflammatory joint disease (confirm with trial site).
- You have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.
- You have been diagnosed with gout.
- You take blood-thinning medication due to a bleeding disorder, or have taken blood thinners within 10 days before surgery.
- You have poor circulation or blood vessel problems that could affect healing.
- You have nerve damage or a neurological condition affecting your limbs (confirm with trial site).
- You are receiving workers' compensation.
- You are currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
- You currently smoke or use tobacco, or you have stopped using tobacco for less than 8 weeks.
- You have diabetes that is not well controlled, with a specific blood sugar marker (HbA1C) above 7.5% (confirm with trial site).
- You are currently misusing drugs or alcohol.
- You have a serious medical illness where life expectancy is less than 2 years, or where surgery would carry very high risk.
- You have suspected nerve problems coming from your neck (confirm with trial site).
- Your deltoid muscle (a key shoulder muscle) is not working properly based on a physical examination.
- A bone in your shoulder (the glenoid) is accidentally broken during the surgery.
- You experience a nerve injury in your arm after the surgery.
- You develop complications after surgery, such as infection, significant bleeding, or problems with the surgical hardware.
