Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 50 and 85 years old
- You have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease using a standard set of recognised medical diagnostic guidelines
- You have mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, confirmed by a memory and thinking test (called the MMSE), with your score falling within a specific range depending on your level of education
- A brain scan (MRI) has shown shrinkage in a memory-related area of your brain (the hippocampus or nearby region) in a way that is consistent with Alzheimer's disease
- Your brain scan results have been rated using a specific scale (MTA-scale), with a score of 2 or higher if you are under 75, or 3 or higher if you are 75 or older
- You are willing to take part in the study and have agreed to do so in writing
Who may not be able to join:
- Your memory or thinking problems are caused by something other than Alzheimer's disease, such as vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies, confusion (delirium), schizophrenia, or depression
- You have a serious condition affecting your heart, liver, kidneys, blood, or have significant malnutrition
- You have difficulty speaking, are not fully conscious, or are unable to take part in the required tests due to a physical disability
- You are taking blood-thinning medications such as warfarin or heparin
- You have a pacemaker fitted, or have had acupuncture in the past 2 weeks
