Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 21 or older
- People who had their first stroke (either a bleeding stroke or a blockage stroke) at least 6 months ago
- People who are able to follow a simple 3-step instruction and remember 2 out of 3 items after a 30-minute delay
- People who have full movement of their unaffected arm, including bending and straightening the elbow and fully opening and closing the hand
- People who have enough movement in their affected shoulder and elbow to place their affected hand on a table for task practice
- People who are able to sit without support in a straight-backed chair without armrests for the duration of the initial assessment
- People who are medically stable
- People who can extend (straighten) their fingers at least 10 degrees on the affected side
- People who have weakness on one side affecting the arm and hand, with finger strength rated no higher than 4 out of 5 on a standard muscle test, and a specific hand movement score within a set range on a standard stroke assessment tool (confirm with trial site)
- People whose skin is unbroken and intact on the affected arm, hand, and scalp
- People whose finger and thumb muscles respond to gentle electrical stimulation on the skin by producing a useful degree of hand opening, without causing pain
- People without significant problems with vision or hearing
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a neurological condition other than stroke that also affects the weaker arm — for example, nerve injury, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury, brain injury from trauma, or multiple sclerosis
- People who have a seizure disorder that is not well controlled
- People who are currently taking certain medications that lower the seizure threshold, as determined by the study doctor
- People who have a cardiac pacemaker, another implanted electronic device, or a stent
- People who are pregnant
- People who have received botox injections into any muscle of either arm in the last 3 months
- People who have no feeling in the affected arm, forearm, or hand
- People with severely impaired thinking or communication abilities
- People with a condition called uncompensated hemi-neglect, where the brain does not properly register sensations on one side of the body (confirm with trial site)
- People who have severe pain in the shoulder or hand that prevents placing the hand in the workspace
- People who have a metal implant in the head
