Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 18 and 90 years old when you join the study
- It has been more than 6 months since your first stroke (either a blockage or bleeding type of stroke)
- You have significant weakness in one hand and wrist, meaning you cannot fully extend your wrist, thumb, or fingers
- You are able to follow a simple 3-step instruction and remember 2 out of 3 items after a short delay
- You can move your shoulder and elbow well enough to rest your weaker hand on your lap to do hand exercises
- The skin on your weaker arm is healthy and unbroken
- Mild electrical stimulation on the fingers and thumb of your weaker hand causes your hand to open without causing pain
- You are able to hear and respond to signals from the stimulation device
- You finished occupational therapy at least 2 months before joining and are not currently receiving it
- You have full movement in your unaffected hand
- You are able to put on and operate the stimulation device yourself, or you have a caregiver who can help you do this
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a metal implant in your head
- You have had seizures as an adult
- You have had a history of alcohol or substance abuse within the last 10 years
- You take anti-seizure or anti-depressant medications that do not work safely with a brain stimulation technique called TMS (confirm with trial site)
- You have a heart pacemaker or any other implanted device that can be electronically programmed
