Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been recently diagnosed with cancer in the mouth, throat (including the back of the throat or voice box area)
- Your planned treatment includes radiation therapy, with or without chemotherapy
- You are 18 years of age or older and able to give your own consent to participate
- You are physically able to use a breathing exercise device that requires you to hold it in your mouth and keep your lips sealed around it
Who may not be able to join:
- Your main treatment involves surgery to the head and neck area (though surgery on the neck lymph nodes alone is allowed)
- Doctors have not yet found where your cancer originally started
- Your cancer is located in the nasopharynx (upper throat behind the nose), nasal sinuses, salivary glands, or skin
- You have a progressive neurological condition that affects muscle strength, such as ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) or Parkinson's disease
- You already have swallowing difficulties caused by something other than your current cancer, such as a previous stroke or traumatic brain injury
- You have previously received radiation therapy to the head or neck
