Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with one of the following types of dementia: Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia (caused by small vessel disease, not stroke), frontotemporal dementia, or dementia with Lewy bodies.
- People whose score on a standard memory and thinking test (called the MMSE) is 15 or lower, indicating moderate to severe dementia.
- People who show significant agitation or aggressive behaviours, as measured by a specific behavioural rating scale used by care staff (confirm with trial site for exact scoring details).
- People who have already tried at least one medication to manage behavioural symptoms, without sufficient success.
- People who are medically stable enough to safely receive ECT (electroconvulsive therapy), as confirmed by a physical examination, urine test, blood tests, and brain imaging if needed.
- People who understand the English language.
- People who have an authorised legal representative who is able and willing to provide informed consent on their behalf.
- People aged 40 and older.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who currently have delirium (a sudden state of confusion), as assessed by a standard clinical tool and medical diagnosis.
- People whose vascular dementia was caused by a stroke, based on their medical history, a recent brain scan, or physical and neurological examination findings.
- People who have ever been diagnosed, or are currently diagnosed, with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or schizoaffective disorder.
- People who have had an active substance use disorder within the past 6 months.
- People who have received ECT or other brain stimulation therapies (such as TMS or vagal nerve stimulation) within the past 3 months.
