Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with stage I through stage IV non-small cell lung cancer (a common type of lung cancer) or esophageal cancer (cancer of the food pipe), and you are scheduled to receive at least 3 weeks of radiation treatment to the chest area.
- You are well enough to carry out some daily activities and take care of yourself — your doctor can confirm whether your current health and activity level meets this requirement (confirm with trial site).
- You are able to read, write, and speak English.
- You are able to give your own consent to take part in the study.
- You have a family member or loved one (such as a spouse, sibling, or adult child) who helps support you during your cancer treatment — for example, by driving you to appointments, preparing meals, or providing emotional support. Note: that person may also be invited to take part in the trial, but their participation is optional. If they do participate, they must be at least 18 years old, able to read, write, and speak English, and able to give their own consent.
Who may not be able to join:
- You have regularly practiced a mind-body activity — such as meditation, yoga, or tai chi — in the year before your cancer diagnosis (what counts as "regular" is based on your own description).
- You have cancer that has spread to the brain or central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord).
