Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have had an acute ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel) confirmed by a brain scan within 48 hours of their symptoms starting
- People who are within 5 days of when their stroke symptoms first began
- People who have been found to have moderate or severe obstructive sleep apnea (a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep), based on a sleep test showing a score of 15 or higher on a breathing disruption scale
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously been prescribed a PAP machine (a breathing device used during sleep for sleep apnea)
- People suspected of having a sleep disorder other than obstructive sleep apnea, such as narcolepsy
- People whose life expectancy is less than 6 months, such as those in hospice care
- People who currently require a mechanical ventilator (a machine that breathes for them)
- People who do not speak English, as the study involves building an ongoing relationship with research staff through conversation
- People whose sleep breathing issues are mostly classified as central sleep apnea (a type where the brain does not send the right signals to breathing muscles), specifically where more than half of breathing events are of this type
- People whose blood oxygen level at rest is below 90%
- People who are not able to give their own informed consent to participate in the study
