Who might be able to join this trial:
- People diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (a specific type of cancer) in the part of the oesophagus (food pipe) that runs through the chest, at certain stages of disease spread as classified by their medical team using the 8th TNM staging system
- People whose cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes in the neck area
- People who have not yet received any treatment for their cancer
- People who are considered medically suitable to undergo surgery to remove part of the oesophagus
- People who are considered medically suitable to receive chemotherapy or a combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy
- People with a performance status score of 0 or 1, meaning they are fully active or have only minor restrictions in physical activity (confirm with trial site)
- People who have provided written consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously received treatment for any cancer
- People who currently have another cancer elsewhere in the body
- People whose tumour measures 8 cm or more in length
- People whose tumour measures 5 cm or more in width
- People who require ongoing steroid medication
- People who have had a heart attack within the past 6 months
- People with a diagnosed psychotic condition
- People whose cancer is not able to be fully removed by surgery
- People for whom the stomach cannot be used to rebuild the food pipe after surgery
- People who are pregnant
