Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who are right-handed (for stroke survivors, this means right-handed before the stroke occurred)
• People who have completed high school or an equivalent level of education
• People who speak English as their first language and were not exposed to a second language before the age of 10
• People who are able to complete the required speaking and MRI tasks, as assessed during an in-person screening visit

For stroke survivors with aphasia (difficulty speaking or understanding language after a stroke), these additional criteria also apply:

• People who had a single stroke, affecting the left side of the brain, more than 6 months before joining the study
• People who have been diagnosed with aphasia using a specific standardised test called the Western Aphasia Battery-Revised
• People who are not receiving any other speech therapy during the full 20-week study period
• People who are able to complete the required therapy tasks, as assessed during an in-person screening visit

Who may not be able to join:

• People who do not pass a vision or hearing screening
• People who cannot have an MRI scan for medical reasons, such as having a pacemaker
• People who are pregnant
• People who have a history of seizures, or who have had a change in seizure medication in the past 12 months
• People who have a history of speech, language, psychiatric, or neurological conditions, or who currently have a serious medical condition (stroke survivors with aphasia may be exempt from this if the condition is a known complication of their stroke)
• Stroke survivors whose hairstyle cannot be changed or adjusted to allow electrode sensors to make contact with the scalp
• Stroke survivors who report having a sensitive scalp
