Who might be able to join this trial:
Healthy younger adults (ages 18–55):
- People aged 18 to 55 years
- People with no diagnosed neurological, heart, lung, muscle, bone, or other ongoing or sudden health conditions
- People who have not had major surgery in the last 6 months or a hospital stay in the last 3 months
- People who are not taking sedative (calming or sleep-inducing) medications
- People who can understand and communicate in English
Healthy older adults (ages 56–90):
- People aged 56 to 90 years
- People with no diagnosed neurological, heart, lung, muscle, bone, or other ongoing or sudden health conditions
- People who have not had major surgery in the last 6 months or a hospital stay in the last 3 months
- People who are not taking sedative medications
- People who are able to walk at least 10 metres, with or without a walking aid
- People who can understand and communicate in English
- People whose balance score (measured by a standard balance test called the Berg Balance Scale) is below 45 out of 56
People who have had a stroke (ages 18–90):
- People aged 18 to 90 years who have had a stroke (self-reported)
- People whose stroke occurred more than 6 months ago
- People with no other neurological conditions besides stroke, and no heart, lung, muscle, bone, or other ongoing health conditions
- People who have not had major surgery in the last 6 months or a hospital stay in the last 3 months
- People who are not taking sedative medications
- People who are able to walk at least 10 metres, with or without a walking aid
- People who can understand and communicate in English
Who may not be able to join:
All groups:
- People whose heart rate, blood pressure, or blood oxygen levels fall outside safe ranges at the start of testing (the trial site will measure these before proceeding)
- People who weigh more than 250 pounds (approximately 113 kg)
Healthy older adults and stroke survivors (additional criteria):
- People whose heel bone density scan shows a result classified as osteoporosis (a T-score below -2)
- People whose score on a standard memory and thinking test (the Mini-Mental State Exam) is below 25 out of 30, which may indicate mild cognitive impairment
- People who, during a 6-minute walking test, experience significant shortness of breath, uncontrolled pain (rated above 3 out of 10), a drop in blood oxygen to below 92%, or who are unable to walk the minimum expected distance for their age
