Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are scheduled for a planned (non-urgent) first-time total hip or total knee replacement surgery
- People who are aged between 55 and 95 years old
- People whose blood test results show signs of malnutrition, meaning at least one of the following: a serum albumin level of 3.5 mg/dl or below, a pre-albumin level below 15 mg/dl, or a transferrin level below 200 mg/dl
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a past history of a joint infection (septic arthritis) in the affected joint
- People who have a known allergy to oral nutritional supplements
- People who are unable to take or swallow oral nutritional supplements
- People who have a condition that prevents their body from properly absorbing protein
- People who have or have had an eating disorder
- People with advanced kidney or liver disease
- People who are having revision surgery (a repeat or corrective joint replacement), emergency surgery, a partial hip replacement (hemiarthroplasty), or a partial knee replacement (unicompartmental knee arthroplasty)
