- People who are having their first coronary artery bypass surgery done without the use of a heart-lung bypass machine (known as "off-pump"), and this is the only procedure being performed
Who may not be able to join:
- People who currently have, or have had in the past, an irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation
- People who are having any other heart or non-heart surgery at the same time
- People whose surgery was started off-pump but had to be switched to using a heart-lung bypass machine during the operation
- People who require emergency surgery
- People who have had heart surgery before
- People who have serious problems with how one or more of their major organs (such as kidneys, liver, or lungs) are working
