Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been diagnosed through a tissue biopsy with a specific type of esophageal (food pipe) cancer called squamous cell carcinoma, located in the chest area, at a locally advanced stage (not yet spread to distant parts of the body), as classified by a standard international staging system.
• People whose ultrasound scan shows no cancer spread to the lymph nodes in the neck area.
• People who have not received any previous treatment for their esophageal cancer.
• People between 18 and 75 years of age.
• People who have no medical reasons that would prevent them from having surgery.
• People whose blood test results meet specific requirements, including healthy levels of white blood cells, neutrophils (a type of infection-fighting cell), platelets, and haemoglobin, as well as normal liver and kidney function within defined ranges (confirm specific values with the trial site).
• People who have not been diagnosed with any other type of cancer and have not received cancer treatment for any other cancer, except for prostate cancer where the person has been cancer-free for more than 5 years.
• People whose cancer is expected to be fully removable by surgery (no cancer left behind).
• People who are in good to excellent general physical condition, able to carry out normal daily activities (assessed using a standard scale called ECOG, scoring 0 or 1).
• People who agree to use contraception during the study and for 6 months after it ends, and women who are not currently breastfeeding.
• People who have read, understood, and signed a consent form agreeing to take part in the trial.

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have more than one primary cancer at the same time.
• People who currently have an infection that requires treatment.
• People who need to take hormone medications on an ongoing basis.
• People who have had unstable chest pain (angina) within the past 3 months, or a heart attack within the past 6 months.
• People who have a psychiatric condition (confirm details with trial site).
• People who have a condition that causes problems with bleeding.
• People who, for any reason, cannot undergo surgery.
• People whose stomach cannot be used to reconstruct the food pipe after surgery due to a previous stomach operation.
• People who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
• People who are known or suspected to be allergic to the chemotherapy drugs cisplatin or paclitaxel.
• People with bronchial asthma who need to use inhalers or other medical treatments from time to time to manage their breathing.
• People who have been taking immunosuppressant medications (drugs that lower the immune system's activity) at a dose of more than 10mg per day for more than 2 weeks before joining the trial, due to another medical condition.
• People who have abnormal blood clotting results or a tendency to bleed, or who are currently receiving blood-thinning or clot-dissolving therapy.
• People who have, or previously have had, lung conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis, interstitial pneumonia, pneumoconiosis, or radiation-related lung damage, or who have severely reduced lung function.
• People who have an autoimmune disease, an immune deficiency condition, or who have had an organ transplant.
• People who have hepatitis B or hepatitis C.
