Who might be able to join this trial:
For people without stroke (control participants):
- People between 45 and 90 years of age
- People with sufficient language and thinking skills to take part in training and testing
- People who are in stable enough health to participate in the study
- People who speak English
For people who have had a stroke:
- People between 45 and 90 years of age
- People who have had a medically confirmed stroke affecting one side of the body, with brain imaging used to rule out other possible causes
- People whose stroke occurred at least 6 months before joining the trial
- People whose stroke occurred in a specific deep region of the brain (such as the internal capsule or deep white matter near the front of the brain)
- People who have mild to moderate difficulty using one arm as a result of their stroke
- People who are in stable enough health to participate in the study
- People who speak English
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are not able to give informed consent to participate
- People with a serious medical illness that would prevent safe participation
- People with joint stiffness, limb contractures, or other physical problems that limit arm movement or would interfere with study activities
- People with significant vision loss that would prevent them from seeing images displayed on the robot's computer screen
- People who would be unable to meet the requirements of the study
- People already enrolled in another research study considered to be above minimal risk
- People with a medical condition or a device implanted in their body (such as a pacemaker) that makes brain stimulation (TMS) or MRI scanning unsafe
- People who are pregnant
