Who might be able to join this trial:
- Children between 5 and 17 years old who have asthma that is not well controlled
- Children who have had at least one overnight hospital stay for asthma in the past six months, OR at least two unplanned clinic or emergency department visits for asthma in the past 12 months
- Children who are either taking a long-term asthma control medication, OR have had asthma symptoms on 3 or more days per week over the past 2 weeks, OR have had nighttime asthma symptoms at least 3 times in the past month
- Homes where cockroaches are present, shown either by catching at least one cockroach in a 3-day trapping period or by a staff member visually confirming cockroaches
- Children who sleep in the home being studied at least 4 nights per week on average
- A parent or caregiver who can speak English or Spanish
Who may not be able to join:
- Children with other serious or ongoing illnesses, including long-term breathing infections that need daily medication
- Children with heart disease that requires daily medication (though high blood pressure alone does not automatically disqualify a child — confirm with trial site)
- Children currently taking a type of medication called a beta-blocker
- Children who currently smoke
- Children who are currently receiving allergy immunotherapy (allergy shots or similar treatments)
- Families who are planning to move within the 12-month follow-up period of the trial
