Who might be able to join this trial:

• You have been diagnosed with squamous cell cancer of the esophagus (food pipe) that has been confirmed by a tissue sample, and the cancer is at a locally advanced stage but has not spread to distant parts of the body.
• A specialist medical team has agreed that your cancer can be surgically removed.
• You are generally active and able to carry out daily activities with little or no restriction (as measured by a standard health scale).
• Your organs (such as kidneys, liver, and heart) are working well enough to participate.
• If you are a woman who could become pregnant, you must have a negative pregnancy test before joining.
• If you could become pregnant or father a child, you must use a highly effective form of contraception during the study and for at least five months after the last treatment.
• If you are currently breastfeeding, you must stop before receiving the first treatment.
• You are able to attend all required appointments and follow the study schedule without major barriers.
• You are willing and able to give written consent to take part in the trial.

Who may not be able to join:

• Your cancer has already spread to distant parts of the body.
• Your tumor has grown into nearby structures in a way that makes it very difficult to remove (confirm with trial site).
• Your tumor cannot be removed surgically without also removing your voice box (larynx).
• You have serious problems with your kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, or hormonal system that would make combination treatment too risky.
• Your doctors do not think you are likely to tolerate the combination of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery.
• You have had a previous cancer in the last 5 years, unless it was completely treated or removed at least 5 years ago.
• You have previously had radiotherapy or chemotherapy with radiotherapy in an area that would overlap with the treatment area for this trial.
• You have a known serious allergic reaction to any of the chemotherapy drugs used in this trial.
• You are unable to understand the study information or follow the study instructions due to language barriers, dementia, or a severe mental health condition.
