Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 60 or under who have been diagnosed with a stroke or mini-stroke (TIA) where no clear cause was found (called a "cryptogenic" stroke or TIA)
- People who have already had a successful procedure to close a small hole in the heart called a PFO (patent foramen ovale), using an approved medical device
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are over 60 years old
- People with a low RoPE score (below 6) — this is a medical scoring tool used to assess how likely the PFO was related to the stroke (confirm with trial site)
- People who still have a moderate or significant amount of blood leaking through the heart closure site after the PFO procedure
- People who have developed an irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation after the PFO closure
- People who have 2 or more of the following heart and blood vessel risk factors: smoking, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol
- People who have diabetes
- People who have a blood clotting disorder, such as Factor V Leiden, Factor II mutation, anticardiolipin antibodies, lupus anticoagulant, anti-beta-2 glycoprotein-I antibodies, or a deficiency in Protein C or Protein S
- People who have had another stroke or mini-stroke within the year after their PFO closure procedure
- People who are unable or unwilling to sign a consent form agreeing to take part in the trial
- People for whom having an MRI scan is medically not safe under any circumstances (for example, those with certain types of metal implants)
