Who might be able to join this trial:
- People diagnosed with primary esophageal cancer that is believed to be contained within the esophagus and has not spread to other areas (generally referred to as Stage 1 to 3).
- People who are scheduled to have esophageal cancer surgery with the goal of removing all the cancer.
- People who are willing to sign a consent form and agree to be randomly assigned to one of two types of anaesthesia during surgery.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had surgery for esophageal cancer, not counting diagnostic biopsies.
- People who are younger than 18 or older than 85 years of age.
- People whose overall health is classified by their medical team as severely compromised (known as ASA Physical Status 4 or higher — confirm with trial site).
- People who have a medical reason why they cannot receive either of the two anaesthetic medicines used in this trial (propofol or sevoflurane).
- People who have another cancer that their surgeon does not believe has been in long-term remission.
- People who have a serious ongoing illness that their surgeon believes carries a 25% or greater risk of death within two years.
