Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 18 and 85 years old
- People who have been diagnosed with an acute ischaemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked artery) affecting the front part of the brain, involving a major artery such as the internal carotid artery or middle cerebral artery
- People whose stroke symptoms were rated as moderately severe or worse (a score of 10 or higher on a standard medical stroke assessment scale) before the procedure
- People who were largely independent in daily life (low disability score) before the stroke occurred
- People who underwent a procedure to remove the blood clot from the blocked artery while under general anaesthetic, and where the procedure successfully restored blood flow, as confirmed by a specialised imaging test at the end of the operation
- People who have given informed consent themselves, or whose legal representative has done so on their behalf
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had a bleed inside the brain within the past 6 weeks
- People who have had a stent placed in the artery responsible for the stroke
- People who had a very low level of consciousness (a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 8 or below) before the procedure
- People with a known allergy to heparin, aspirin, clopidogrel, rapamycin, lactic acid polymer, stainless steel, or to contrast dye used in imaging
- People for whom a specific sedative medication called dexmedetomidine is not medically suitable
- People with very low haemoglobin (a measure of red blood cells), very low platelet levels (cells that help blood clot), abnormal blood clotting results, or other bleeding problems that cannot be corrected
- People with serious liver or kidney problems, based on blood test results that are significantly outside the normal range
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People with a known history of mental illness
- People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial
