Who might be able to join this trial:
- People between 40 and 75 years old.
- People who have a smoking history of at least 20 pack-years (a measure of how much a person has smoked over their lifetime — confirm with trial site if unsure how this applies).
- People who have not been diagnosed with COPD or asthma.
- People whose breathing test results show no blockage or obstruction in their airways, based on a measurement called FEV1/FVC being 0.7 or higher.
- People whose lung function measurements (FEV1 and FVC) are above the normal lower limit for their age and size.
- People who have smoked less than 1 pack-year of tobacco overall and have not used any tobacco products in the past 12 months.
- Participants will be placed into one of two groups based on a lung volume measurement called RV/TLC — one group for those with a normal result, and one for those with a higher-than-normal result.
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a history of injecting drugs within the past 20 years, using injected drugs more than 100 times, or using them for longer than one year.
- People who have inhaled recreational drugs other than marijuana under the same conditions listed above.
- People who have smoked more than 400 marijuana joints in their lifetime, or any marijuana use within the past 6 months.
- People who are unable to walk briskly, run on a treadmill, or pedal on an exercise bike at the level required by the study.
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People with serious or active heart conditions, including stable or unstable angina, a heart attack within the last 2 years, active heart failure, or a heart condition caused by reduced blood flow.
- People with liver cirrhosis (scarring of the liver).
- People with a history of long-term active Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C infection.
