Who might be able to join this trial:
- Men between 18 and 49 years old
- People who have given written agreement to take part (or whose legal representative has done so)
- People with confirmed inflammation in the small intestine (ileum) and/or colon, whose disease is currently relatively stable and scores 8 or below on a standard disease activity measure called the Harvey-Bradshaw Index
- People who have shown some signs of active disease, such as a history of elevated levels of a blood marker called CRP, or signs of active inflammation in the gut lining
- People with no blockages or narrowings in the intestine that would make it difficult to eat a normal diet
- People whose weight has been stable for at least 3 months and who are not receiving nutrition through a feeding tube
- People who are willing to complete screening steps (including height, weight, a fasting blood test, and a medical history questionnaire) and willing to eat the diet provided by the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose inflammation is not well controlled and who are likely to need surgery or a change in treatment within the next 4 weeks
- People currently taking corticosteroids at a dose greater than 20 mg per day
- People who show no signs of active inflammation
- People taking medications known to affect how the body processes protein and amino acids (such as steroids)
- People who have recently experienced significant weight loss
- People currently following a weight-loss diet
- People who are unlikely to be able to tolerate the study diet
- People who are not expected to be able to follow the study procedures
- People who drink more than 2 cups of coffee per day
- People who drink more than one alcoholic drink per day
