Who might be able to join this trial:
Group 1 — People with both chronic kidney disease and peripheral artery disease:
- People who are older than 20 years of age at the time of screening
- People with chronic kidney disease where the kidneys are working at a reduced but stable level (a specific kidney function measurement called eGFR is between 15 and 60, and has not changed significantly in the past 30 days)
- People with peripheral artery disease (reduced blood flow in the limbs) causing noticeable symptoms, confirmed by blood pressure measurements in the limbs or imaging tests
Group 2 — People without chronic kidney disease or peripheral artery disease:
- People who are older than 20 years of age at the time of screening
- People whose kidneys are functioning at a normal or near-normal level (eGFR above 60)
- People with no diagnosed peripheral artery disease
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose kidney function has fallen to a very low level (eGFR below 15)
- People who are severely malnourished, based on a low protein level in the blood (albumin below 2.0 g/dL)
- People with severe anaemia or active bleeding in the digestive tract
- People with stomach ulcers, swollen veins in the oesophagus, a blocked bowel, or who are currently fasting
- People who have previously had surgery on any part of their digestive system
- People with ongoing chronic constipation, unless it is manageable with oral laxatives
- People who have had a major bleeding episode requiring a blood transfusion during the current hospital admission
- People with a confirmed advanced liver condition (classified as Child-Pugh B or C)
- People who have received a solid organ or blood cell transplant
- People producing very little urine (less than 500 mL per day)
- People with a blocked urinary tract or polycystic kidney disease
- People who have used antibiotics or probiotic supplements in the two weeks before enrolling, or who would need to use them during the follow-up period
- People who have been diagnosed with or treated for a cancer in the past five years
- People living with HIV/AIDS
- People who have recently experienced a heart attack, acute coronary syndrome, or severe heart failure
